History of Chocolate Chip Cookies

May 14, 2008 by Kayla

In the mid 1930s a woman by the name of Ruth Wakefield accidentally stumbled upon Americas favorite cookie and so began the history of the chocolate chip cookie.

The chocolate chip cookie was originally discovered when Mrs. Wakefield substituted her usual melted bakers chocolate for Nestlse semisweet chocolate bar. When the bar didn’t melt completely it left little bits of chocolate, known today as chocolate chips, in the cookies.

The recipe became so popular and the cookies so delicious that Ruth began posting her recipe in newspapers and even sparked up a deal with Andrew Nestle himself; a lifetime supply of chocolate bars for Ruth if Nestl could put her recipe on their chocolate packaging, which is still on their package today!

Following Nestls new packaging plan with Ruths recipe, Nestle also began packaging their famous chocolate bars with a little chopper. People around the nation were beginning to hear about the popular cookies and they soon wanted to make the cookies in their own home. With the new chopper, they too could follow the directions of Mrs. Wakefield and make their own chocolate chip cookie!

In 1939, a major step in the history of the chocolate chip cookie occurred. Nestle came out with little chocolate morsels made specifically for chocolate chip cookies to replace the bar of chocolate with the chopper idea. The chocolate chip cookie soon became the most popular cookie in America and today we consume nearly seven billion a year, thirty-three thousand of those are made by Toll House each day!

As for the Toll House Inn it was sold by Ruth as the years passed and the family who bought it tried to turn the homey Inn into a wild nightclub. Needless to say, that didnt really work.

After the failure of the club, the Inn was bought by another family who returned in back to its original glory. Despite the storied history at the Inn, in 1984, it burnt down on News Year Eve.

Thanks to Ruth Wakefield, the chocolate chip cookie was born and so she earned a place in our hearts. The history of the chocolate chip cookie is such a delightful piece of Americana doesnt it make you want to bake up a batch of cookies right now!
