Buttercream Icing Recipe
August 17, 2008 by Kayla
Buttercream icing—perfect for decorating, icing… or just eating! A buttercream frosting will give a cake a smooth look, yet not turn as crusty as royal icing may.
In addition, buttercream icing is great tasting and super convenient. Did you know that you don’t need to refrigerate a cake topped with buttercream frosting? Why not? Well, buttercream icing has a strong amount of straight sugar in it which makes it impossible for bacteria to grow! Pretty neat, right?
Well, go ahead and enjoy this classic buttercream icing recipe. It’s delicious, it’s simple, and it’s the perfect finishing touch for any beautiful cake.
Yield: 3 cups
Ingredients:
- ½ cup solid vegetable shortening
- ½ cup unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon clear vanilla
- 4 cups sifted confectioner’s sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk
Directions:
1) Cream butter and shortening with electric mixer. Add vanilla. Gradually add sugar, one cup at a time; beat well on medium speed.
2) Scrape bowl often. When sugar has been mixed in, icing will appear dry. Add milk and beat at medium speed until light and fluffy. Keep airtight.
Yum! This frosting recipe may not seem like much, but when it comes to frosting a cake, it’s this delicious attention to detail that will really “take the cake”! Enjoy this tasty buttercream icing recipe for yourself.
