Cookie with 6,000 Pounds of Chocolate
June 29, 2008 by Kayla · Leave a Comment
Well, it’s official… all the cows are dry and it’s all because of what happened one afternoon on a football field. It was on that fateful day that the world’s largest cookie was constructed. In order to indulge in such an enormous treat, that would require thousands of glasses of milk, but in this case it was worth the costs.
If for no other reason, this cookie helped to cut back on energy costs all around the city for one day. For one day, no one had to bake cookies in their traditional energy sucking appliance. They were being “green“.
The world’s largest cookie, chocolate chip no doubt, was 31m (102 feet) in diameter and weighted 18,000 kg (40,000 lb)! That’s one big and heavy chocolate chip cookie! Want to make a cookie like this on your own. It sounds like an “interesting” task to tackle to sasy the least. Well, if you’re up for the challenge, you’ll need…
- 12,200 lbs. of Unbleached Flour
- 6,525 lbs. of Unsalted Butter
- 6,000 lbs. of Dark Chocolate Chunks
- 5,000 lbs. of Granulated Sugar
- 3,370 lbs. of Dark Brown Sugar
- 30,000 Whole Eggs
- 184 lbs. of Salt
- 79 lbs. Baking Soda
- 10 gallons of Pure Vanilla
Wow… when I first heard this story I thought, “well, I think I’ll go to the local grocery store and pick up these few items so I can get to baking.” I’ll only need a couple thousands pounds or each ingredient. (No thanks, I think I’ll just read about it!) Even beyond the fact that this cookie is huge, you have to wonder, how’d they blend all this batter and who had to clean the mixer?
Recent Outbreak in Childhood Depression
Ok, so it may not be a real depression, but now that the beloved Cookie Monster has taken an oath for healthy eating… the reality is certainly coming. The furry little guy who used to sing “C is for cookie” is now sining what? C is for celery?
With the new rise in childhood obesity rates, many popular television shows are making a change. Everyone’s favorite cookie loving creature with the blue fur is shocking everyone as he now sports a healthier diet.
On the popular television show Sesame Street, the scruffy Cookie monster has cut down on his chocolate chip cookie addiction and although withdrawal is a serious concern for Cookie Monster, he is trying to be a little healthier.
The fuzzy monster has even devised a new song to promote his new lease on life, “A Cookie Is a Sometimes Food.” In this cheery tune, Cookie Monster learns about how there are “anytime” foods and “sometimes” foods. Unfortunately for all of us, Cookie Monster had learned that cookies are, indeed, a sometimes food.
While this is great for the GROWING next generation, it brings up the many questions from the older fans that grew up with Cookie Monster living a life of no limitations! Sesame Street’s new plan, “Healthy Habits for Life”, is a great influence on children and impacts the food that they put in their mouth.
“With the rise in childhood obesity, Sesame Street VP of Research and Education, Dr. Rosemarie Truglio said, “Sesame Street” is concentrating on the need to teach children about healthy foods and physical activity.” The show is even going as far as to provide health tips at the beginning of each show.
They go on to say that Sesame is about good lifestyles, and not just the ever consistent numbers and letters. Obesity is a big problem with children today and even Cooke Monster is willing to adapt to these changes.
After all, at the end of Cookie Monster’s song where he learns about cookies being a sometimes food, he asks if sometimes is now. He is replied with a simple “yes” and gobbles a cookie down.
So cookies may be decreasing in the world of Sesame Street, but they’re not gone for good. In a world, ruled by Muppets and string puppets, there is still room for a cookie here and there!

Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe

The first time I ever tasted my Grandma Mary’s Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe and can actually remember it was when I was in the second grade. My grandma made a whole batch of these fabulous chewy cookies and brought them to our house one night when she came over for dinner.
Once I had the first bite, I couldn’t stop! Oh course my mom took the cookies away so I wouldn’t ruin my dinner…but I bet you can guess what I had for dessert! Yep, Grandma’s scrumptious oatmeal chocolate chip cookies! I was in heaven.
Grandma told me she’d been making this recipe since she was in high school and there’s no doubt in my mind that she hasn’t changed a thing at all.
This cookie is so full of that warm oatmeal taste and packed with tons of chocolate chips. I love how soft and chewy this cookie is and I hardly ever wait till they even cool completely before I have a few with a big glass of milk.
Ingredients:
- ½ cup shortening
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ½ cup sugar
- 1 large egg, beaten
- 1 tablespoon water
- ½ teaspoon vanilla
- ¾ cup sifted flour
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 ½ cups quick oats
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon, optional
- 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Directions:
1) Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line cookie sheet with parchment paper to make for an easy clean up.
2) In large bowl, beat shortening and sugars together. Mix until well creamed.
3) In small bowl, mix egg, water, vanilla and cinnamon, if desired, together. Add to creamed sugar mixture. Mix well. (My Pops is a huge fan of cinnamon and so I usually add it in for a little something extra!)
3) In medium bowl, mix flour, baking soda, salt and quick oats. Add to creamed sugar mixture. Mix well.
4) Stir in chocolate chips.
5) Bake at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes until golden brown. Edges will be browner than center.
6) Remove from oven and cool completely on wire rack.
Something tells me that someday I will be making this very recipe for Oatmeal Chocolate Chip Cookies for my kids and I will definitely make sure that I tell them the story of Grandma Mary and the first time I tasted this delectable delight. You know it’s a great recipe if after all these years, my Grandma, who is an amazing cook, hasn’t changed one thing about the recipe. Just writing this makes me want to go a cook up a batch of these oatmeal chocolate chip cookies right now!
Who Invented Chocolate Chip Cookies?
May 14, 2008 by Kayla · Leave a Comment
The mysteries behind a cookies history can sometimes seem to be endless, but for Americas favorite, the chocolate chip cookie, its got us guessing… who invented the chocolate chip cookie?
This may seem like an impossible question to answer; with many companies claiming the title, but actually only one woman is the true inventor of the chocolate chip cookie.
According to the Eagle Tribune, the person who invented the chocolate chip cookie was Ruth Wakefield.
In 1924 Ruth graduated from the Framingham State Normal School Department of Household Arts. For many years Ruth gave food lectures and worked hard as a dietitian. Ruth first discovered the chocolate chip cookie like many other famous foodsby mistake. Her story and the cookies story started when she and her husband opened a little Inn known as the Toll House Inn in Whitman, Massachusetts.
To bring in more visitors, Wakefield baked fresh cookies for the guests. Her most popular, the Butter Drop Do cookie, is responsible for creating the chocolate chip cookie. The Butter Drop Do cookie recipe called for bakers chocolate but one day Ruth ran out. Frantically searching for a substitute she grabbed a Nestle Chocolate bar (a gift from Andrew Nestle himself), chopped it up, and threw it into the batter.
Fortunately for us, the chocolate didnt completely melt and so in the cookies there were little pieces of the chocolate chips still left! Mrs. Wakefield, who invented the chocolate chip cookie, was stunned with her cookies success and before long her new cookie was extremely popular!
Along with the growing demand of the cookie, sales of the Nestle semi-sweet chocolate bar also increased. Ruth Wakefield and Andrew Nestle soon formed a partnership in order to accommodate the large increase in sales. The deal said that Ruth could have a lifetime supply of Nestle chocolate if she would let Nestle print the Toll House Cookie recipe on their packaging. She agreed and weve been enjoying her chocolate chip cookies for many generations now.
Not only is Ms. Ruth Wakefield the woman who invented the chocolate chip cookie but she also invented an age-old American tradition.
